2015 Canuck Corey Johnson

Postby LJay » Mon Sep 29, 2014 6:47 pm

Shooting guard. I thought there was a topic on him before but couldn't find it. Was on the Canadian Junior National team. Our last Canadian shooting guard turned out pretty good:

@HoopsHypeCA: Ottawa, ON's 2015 Corey Johnson has serious interest from Butler, Creighton, Davidson, Harvard, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, UMass & Xavier

Does he have an offer?
With us losing out on McQuaid I'd think we'd be pushing hard to get him and Poyser on campus.

Sounds like he's a lights out shooter at 6'5". If the staff really wants to add a pure shooter to the roster, even after missing on McQuaid, let's get this kid on campus.

Our last Canadian shooter worked out pretty well. Jahenns was from Ottawa and ended up #6 all time in 3pts.....would love to see Johnson try to beat it.

Hope Corey comes to the hilltop for a visit.

Top Shooters:
Corey Johnson, Canada, 6’4”, SG, Vermont Academy, 2015
Armed with a jump shot straight out of a shooting video, Corey Johnson hit five three’s in the opening game of the Challenge. While he cooled off a bit after his initial outburst, Johnson finished the four day event shooting 38.5% from three (15-38). Right now Johnson is hearing from mid-majors along with schools such as Creighton and Virginia Tech but expect that to change come November with the arrival of the National Prep Showcase. He can hit three’s from a stand still position as well as off the dribble and has good size and strength for a shooting guard.

Why do we seem to be going for players against so many of the same schools over an over? Seems like VT has been after a few of the same targets. Same with Boston College and Providence. I understand we are going to compete with Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Mizzou etc. regularly simply because of geography. But it's interesting to keep running into the same East coast schools on the recruiting trail. I don't think Buzz Williams' system resembles ours in any way, shape, or form.

I don't believe Harvard gives athletic scholarships, but not too naïve to think they wouldn't give a tidy academic scholly. Best wishes for this young man.

I don't believe things have changed. Back in the day Ivy League schools did not give out athletic scholarships. They gave out scholarships and as long as your GPA stayed above a certain mark you kept the scholarship even if you decided to discontinue participation on an athletic team.

From Harvard Website
We follow two key principles:

1. Admission to Harvard is need-blind, meaning your financial need will not impede your chances of admission.
2. Aid is based entirely on need, not merit.

Meaning...the less money a family makes, the more aid a player will receive. Actually, a rostered basketball player will receive the same aid if he/she is on the basketball team or quits and is just a student.
