2015 F Alex O'Neill (Walk-on Commit)

Postby Chicagojayfan » Tue Apr 21, 2015 8:23 pm

did he just commit as a walk-on? Joey tweeted about it. Had offers from Bradley (greyshirt offer) and UNOmaha, I believe.

6'9 Illinois Center. Being called a preferred walk-on by numerous wonks. That would normally mean earning a ride after sitting a year. Will look for more info.

I think a greyshirt would mean scholarship after a year, but preferred walk often seems to mean in line to earn one, but not guaranteed. I managed to find a bit - looks like he was committed to UNOmaha originally and then got a greyshirt offer from Bradley. We brought him in and offered him a walk-on spot. Found some film on him

Shown as 6-9 about 220. He's not a guy who will jump out of the gym, but he's well coached, active, physical and shows nice hands and touch in the post. I think our coaches do a nice job of evaluating post players and I like him. Great pick up as a walk-on.

Here's an article from the Peoria Journal-Star from earlier this week about Alex:

He was originally committed to UNO but will walk-on here instead (at least for one year). His brother, Nick, played soccer for Creighton and mom, Janet, played hoops for the Jays too. So he comes from a long line of Bluejays!

More video. Younger for his class but not skinny. Seems to play at or below the rim but is a post player.

in most cases that's not what preferred walk on means - it's generally applied to football

but - it means he's recruited walk on and will get access to S&C, training table and all that stuff over the summer - same as Mo and clement

some programs (i don't know if mac does this) - will then have an open walkon kind of tryout - and if you're good enough you get to be practice fodder

Honorable mention all-state in smallest class. Reminded me of the Darian Harris videos of a guy a LOT taller than everyone else on the floor.

Nice pick up. Good news that players who receive D1 offers are choosing to walk on at Creighton instead. Kreklow turns down UNL scholly and now O'Neill turns down a UNO scholly. Who knows what he'll contribute but he's got good size and Mac isn't afraid to use walk-ons as Clement proved last season.
