Big East 2023-2024

Postby SeattleJay » Sat Jun 10, 2023 10:31 am

I thought it might be good to start a BE thread for this year.

Last year’s BE was pretty fantastic with almost half the league getting consistently into the top 25 all season long. In addition to winning, the national championship, the BE had by far the best record in the NCAA tournament.

Surprisingly, the team that was picked to finish 9th in the league not only won the BE regular season but also won the BET. Then, the team that finished in a tie for 4th won the NC. Finally, this all happened in a year where the strongest team in the league for the last 10 years and a blue blood, had a down year.

This upcoming season looks every bit as strong with the top 3 teams frequently getting mentions as top 10 schools.

Now that the NBA draft deadline has passed, rosters are close to complete. It looks to be another great year for the league. I am grateful that CU, my double alma mater, is in this league.

What a great year last year was for The Big East and the Jays! Wow. And yet I still think we have so much more room to grow. It’s not just a great time to be a Jay fan, it’s THE BEST time to be a Jay fan. EVER.
At Creighton Bob Gibson majored in sociology and starred in Basketball and Baseball. In 1957 Gibson received a $3,000 sign-on bonus with St. Louis Cardinals, but delayed his HOF Cards career a year to play pro B-ball with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Bart Torvik has the following national projections for the BE teams:
4. U Conn
5. CU
15. Nova
18. MU (seems low to me)
40. XU
42. PC
54. SH
75. SJU
91. Butler
132. DePaul
145. GT

Thoughts?

Cooley is a good coach and Georgetown won’t be in the cellar.

MU underrated and because of their coaches X and St John’s are severely underrated…

And I hope my gut feeling is wrong and like seeing us so high but I think CU and UCONN might be a tad overrated… hope I’m wrong!

I think the Big East will be the highest NET conference rank

Marquette underrated? In several preseason polls I checked out they were ranked anywhere from 2 to 8. Consensus preseason #1 or bust I suppose.

Will be interesting to see if Marquette can recreate last year when they kind of took everyone by surprise and how much losing OMax impacts their overall performance.

Also going to be interesting to see how quickly Cooley gets Georgetown on the right track. Really starting from scratch with the roster, so might not all click right away. And how will English fare in his first year with some solid pieces remaining for Providence? What about Neptune in a second year with Moore all year?

UConn lost a LOT of its core key pieces from last year. I get that Clingan will get a lot more minutes, but Sanogo, Hawkins, and Jackson is a lot to just replace.

Buckle up.

Marquette is the BE champ until someone takes it from them. They were regular season and tourney champs. Return all but 1 player. So, I would vote them preseason #1 in BE. Obviously UConn's NC makes them top dogs nationally, but they have a lot more roster turnover. Strong team coming back with returners and new players, but Marquette has less unknowns in my opinion than UConn and Creighton.

I do think Nova should be great this year. And, I think XU is being underranked this year. Also, Providence should be higher as long as English can coach.
