WBR's Bluejay Rewind: Summer '17 Edition

Postby Polyfro » Thu Jul 27, 2017 2:18 pm

Another summer of Bluejay Rewind begins with a terrible game that had a classic ending: the December, 2004 game at Nebraska. Neither team shot well (at all), but Kellen Miliner made it memorable when he stuck a game-winning jumper with 0.4 seconds left. Enjoy all the action with this look back, along with all the highlights!

Favorite things to watch from this game include,

Greg Sharpe saying "Creighton has upset Nebraska" at the end of the game. We can't remember the spread by the way but CU was 7-1 with big wins over OSU and Xavier, Nebraska was 3-2. Also CU had won 5 straight regular season games against UNL so to call this an upset is laughable.

The "Classiest fans in the world" bringing rec specs and eye charts to heckle Tyler McKinney who had almost lost his eye the year before. This was mentioned in an SI article where UNL fans get compared to Maryland fans. Next time your idiot UNL fan neighbor says it's just a couple fans and they are the best fans in the world remind them of this please.

Finally the PxP/Color team of Greg Sharpe and Matt Davidson on a "Neutral" broadcast. Sharpe and Davidson were practically giddy when UNL banks in that 3 and then almost to the point of depression when Millner sinks that shot.

Not to mention how they used "we" to refer to Nebraska. Good viewing for Friday afternoon!

It's 2003 MVC Tournament Week on Bluejay Rewind: three Rewinds in three days looking back at that title run. First up, we set the stage and check out highlights from an excruciating nail biter against Indiana State in the quarterfinals.

Tomorrow: another nail biter against Wichita State. And then on Thursday...a not-so-nailbiter against SIU

Day Two of 2003 MVC Tournament Week on Bluejay Rewind takes a look back at the semifinals, where CU fell behind by double digits to Wichita State before coming back. But you probably remember it better as the game where DeAnthony Bowden sneaks up behind the Shocker ball handler for a strip steal in the final minute to prevent a game-winning shot attempt, and Larry House punctuating the win moments later with an inbounds-pass-dunk.

Tomorrow: the title game against SIU. Or as the DVD has been labeled in my library for the 15 years since it happened, the "Can O'Whoop Ass" game.

The epic conclusion of WBR's 2003 MVC Tourney Week is here -- the dismantling of SIU in the title game, 80-56. As fun as it was to rewatch the footage of that game (has to be one of the most *satisfying* wins in the modern era of Creighton hoops, IMHO), it was just as much fun to relive all of SIU's antics leading up to it. I'd completely forgotten that Bruce Weber spent his acceptance speech for Valley COY jabbing Dana Altman (and not jokingly) and bitching about not winning it the year before, for example, and then saying they'd waited all year for a rematch with the Jays in the title game. Between that, the SIU team wearing shirts during pregame shoot around before all three games that weekend that said "Who will be celebrating Monday night?", the SIU fans wearing "IH8 CR8N" shirts all over St. Louis...and then to completely and thoroughly embarrass them on national TV?

Yeah, that's a satisfying win.

What poly said...and I would add that some Salukis in their h8 Cr8n t shirts apologized to me in the concourse before the game for what their team was about to do to the Jays. You have no idea how hard I tried to find those sumbitches at half time and throughout the rest of the game, though we all know they were gone well before halftime.

It is really hard to overstate how well Korver played in this game. We were up 26 at half, Korver had only one bucket, but everything else he did just dominated the game. The sequence where he saved a turnover by grabbing a loose ball, made the bucket, then stole the ball and fed Dabbert for a dunk was just so Korver. As W&B write up said, his defense on Dearman was tremendous. Just a joy to watch a player contribute so completely to his team's win, even without scoring a bunch.

Who could forget when Weber used all of his time outs before the first half? And that gaping mouth wide open all night. That was one of the most satisfying wins ever in St Louis.
