Any competition requires grit... regardless of sport or talent level. Seen a lot of talent collapse under pressure and adversity. Happens all the time, actually. And the higher the level of competition you go, the more it depends on grit and the ability to stay focused on the task at hand as well as being able to overcome adversity.

Because the talent and athleticism differences, for the most part are minute. Sure, there are a handful of players that are head and shoulders above the rest at any given time. But more often than not, mentality is the difference between winning and losing. Just ask anybody who has played at a high level and they will tell you the same.

RE: worries about the team being too dependent on the 3, it's worth noting that Wayne State designed its defense to take away the rolls and lobs for Kalkbrenner, which left guys open on the perimeter open all game. We saw teams employ that game plan a number of times last year (e.g. Nebraska), but I think it will be harder to do that this year with the personnel changes. Mac also kept the game plan pretty vanilla on their side of things.

Ultimately, you can't really take away much at all from that game. But boy did Trey look good. In complete control very time he had the ball and picked WSC apart in a variety of ways.

Also, four of Ashworth's six assists were for 3s - two to Trey, one to Baylor, one to Isaac. Also had a nice transition toss to King for a dunk and a tight-window post entry to Kalk for a bucket.

Dotzler getting in the game ahead of Lawson probably surprised some, but Lawson was with the second team every practice scrimmage I got a chance to see and Josiah swung between both. J-Law can really, really shoot, but he doesn't look terribly comfortable handling the ball and obviously is still adjusting to their schemes on both sides of the ball.
