I also listened to that exchange- and I took it a much different way. Durbin did not reference Zuck's texts- but his "messages"- i.e. facebook messaging.

I watch crazy cousins and friends share where they are at every minute on the Facebook. If someone is willing to share where they are and doing, I think the advertisers should be able to pinpoint who might be interested in stopping at the Jamba Juice next to where they are staying. People cannot be that naive that this free service online isn't making money somehow- right?

I prefer my targeted ads and appreciate that the advertising dollars that companies get to spend are far less wasted on blanketed non-sense. If i looked at a shirt on Banana Republic, i appreciate an ad showing me that shirt elsewhere to remind me about it.

What is the difference between targeted ads on Facebook and the direct mail piece that comes in telling me there is a new pizza place in the neighborhood?

If you don't want your interests or demographics to go to advertisers, then don't use the Facebook service.

Also- I didn't completely care about how old and out of touch our government was until yesterday- that was like explaining how to use an iPhone to my mom- painful to watch this old, out of touch men try and be tough with a billionaire genius.

I'm with ya, I was only pointing it out because I thought it was a funny exchange. I absolutely loath Dick Durbin and I don't do facebook but I thought the exchange was really fun to watch. I totally agree with you on targeting ads. I have no problem with Apple knowing where I am 99% of the time. I live a boring life so if Apple uses my movements and activities online to hopefully enhance my life I am all for it.
BUT there is about 1% of the rumors out of facebook that do cause me pause. Like if they or someone else have on my laptop's camera or microphone and are recording me that would freak me out. I know they are supposed to have to ask u to turn it on but....
I don't let my wife know how much I gamble so I don't think Apple needs to know that either. If the guy down the street is into rabbit porn thats his business. I think most of us are ok with others knowing 99% of what we do to enhance our lives but I don't want them to see all of it cause I do some weird shit every once in a while.

Crap. All this time, I had no idea you lived just up the street from me. I guess I should get out more. You know, mingle with the neighbors, even the ones who don't share my, um, affection for wildlife.

I'm one of those old, out of touch people FereJay cruelly mocks (and wait till your Mom finds out who you lumped her in with) so this may be dumb and dopey, not to mention duh, but doesn't even our little board here engage in or allow micro-targeted ads? It seems like it, anyway, since I've seen a hell of a lot of rabbit-related advertising over the years, which makes me feel special and kind of creeped out at the same time. But it seems like that's kind of commonplace, just another day in Oceania. Of course, our mods haven't let any info get weaponized yet, like The Facebook, so that we haven't ended up with, say, CUFinalFour as our Supreme Moderator. Not yet, anyway.

Is it true that the University of North Carolina attempted to buy our data from FreddyMac?

This story's gotten garbled and twisted over the years, so this is a good time to set the record straight. What actually happened is that North Carolina created an online, pass/fail, exam-free, self-pacing, instructorless, six-credit-hour course for athletes only entitled: "The Gold Standard of Messageboards: Analysis and Selected Readings from the BluejayUnderground".

If you google rabbit porn you have to go through a lot of non rabbit porn before you get to the good stuff

Note: I didn't say the non rabbit porn was bad, just thats its not the rabbit porn I was thinking of

The article said keystrokes. But your explanation makes sense. Thanks.

Sorry, been too busy attending to my yacht to check the board so I missed this. It's unbelievable what people will pay me to know what you guys look at online.

My yacht crew uses an expensive hi-gloss lacquer paint. However it weathers poorly, resulting in having to repaint every 2 years. What do you use Freddy?
